Site description (2000 baseline)
Marshland enclosed behind dykes, with several larger streams and canals.

Key biodiversity
More than 20,000 waterbirds occur on passage, Pluvialis apricaria being the most numerous. Several species listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive breed at the site, including Circus aeruginosus, C. pygargus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Philomachus pugnax, Asio flammeus and Luscinia svevica.
