CH028
Maggia valley

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2000 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Rock Partridge Alectoris graeca NT breeding (1996) 40–60 pairs B2
Eurasian Wryneck Jynx torquilla LC breeding (1996) 20–40 pairs B2
Yellow-billed Chough Pyrrhocorax graculus LC resident (1996) 25 pairs A3
Wallcreeper Tichodroma muraria LC resident (1996) present A3
Common Redstart Phoenicurus phoenicurus LC breeding (1996) 100 pairs B2
Rufous-tailed Rock-thrush Monticola saxatilis LC breeding (1996) 10–25 pairs B2
Alpine Accentor Prunella collaris LC resident (1996) 30–50 pairs A3
White-winged Snowfinch Montifringilla nivalis LC resident (1996) present A3
Citril Finch Carduelis citrinella LC breeding (1996) present A3

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2000. The most recent assessment (2013) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2013 not assessed medium low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no unset medium

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Residential and commercial development happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Natural system modifications happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Pollution happening now whole of population/area (>90%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now some of population/area (10–49%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Climate change and severe weather likely in long term (>4 years) whole of population/area (>90%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Some of area covered (10–49%) A management plan exists, but it is out of date or not comprehensive Very little or no conservation action taking place low
