Rio Araguaia - Secondary Area

Country/Territory Brazil
General characteristics

This area includes the lower and middle region of the Araguaia river in Brazil, from Araguatins in northern Tocantins south to Bananal Island, the largest river island in the world, formed between the Araguaia and the Braço Menor do Rio Araguaia, in southern Tocantins (see map, p. 286). Bananal Antbird Cercomacra ferdinandi is confined to this area, inhabiting the lower growth of deciduous and gallery forest, and riparian thickets (Ridgely and Tudor 1994), this vegetation being a transition between the humid Amazon forest to the north and west, and the dry forest of the Brazilian central plateau to the east and south. Much of the northern half of Bananal island falls within the Araguaia National Park (5,623 km2), which holds good numbers of the antbird; in addition, two more-widespread threatened birds have been recorded there-Chestnut-bellied Guan Penelope ochrogaster (classified as Vulnerable) andHyacinth Macaw Anodorhynchus hyacinthinus (Vulnerable).
