Justification of Red List category
This species has a small range, albeit does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the range size criterion (Extent of Occurrence <20,000 km2 combined with a declining or fluctuating range size, habitat extent/quality, or population size and a small number of locations or severe fragmentation). The population is suspected to be Stable and does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population trend criterion (>30% decline over ten years or three generations). The population size has not been quantified, but it is not believed to approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population size criterion (<10,000 mature individuals with a continuing decline estimated to be >10% in ten years or three generations, or with a specified population structure). For these reasons the species is evaluated as Least Concern.
Population justification
The global population size has not been quantified, but this species is described as 'common' (Stotz et al. 1996, Curson 2020).
Trend justification
Tree cover loss in the last 10 years has equated to less than 2% within the species range (Global Forest Watch 2021, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein). Whilst forest loss may accelerate in the future, based on projection of habitat loss in parts of the species' range (per Negret et al. 2021), it is unknown if such rates will be sufficiently rapid. As such, the population is suspected to be Stable.
The species is found only across the Santa Marta Mountains of Northern Colombia (Curson 2020).
The species occurs in humid, montane forest, cloudforest and forest edges at elevations of 1,200-3,050 m (Curson 2020). The species largely feeds on insects. Breeding season occurs approximately from April to July (Curson 2020).
The species is projected to undergo moderate rates of decline due to deforestation across the species' suitable habitat range (Negret et al. 2021).
Conservation Actions Underway
None are known.
Conservation Actions Proposed
Investigate population numbers and trends. Research is required to determine the exact affect of deforestation.
