Justification of Red List category
This species has an extremely large range, and hence does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the range size criterion (Extent of Occurrence <20,000 km2 combined with a declining or fluctuating range size, habitat extent/quality, or population size and a small number of locations or severe fragmentation). The population trend appears to be increasing, and hence the species does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population trend criterion (>30% decline over ten years or three generations). The population size is very large, and hence does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population size criterion (<10,000 mature individuals with a continuing decline estimated to be >10% in ten years or three generations, or with a specified population structure). For these reasons the species is evaluated as Least Concern.
Population justification
The global population is estimated to number 760,000 mature individuals (Partners in Flight 2020).
Trend justification
The species has been roughly stable over the past five decades (Partners in Flight 2020). Over the past ten years however, the population has undergone a statistically non-significant increase of 24% (Pardieck et al. 2018). It is noted, though, that there is some deficiency in the data for this, but overall the species is suspected to be increasing. This is despite the impacts of threats such as habitat loss, disturbance at lek sites and hunting (del Hoyo et al. 1994).
Tympanuchus phasianellus has a wide distribution in central, northern and northwestern North America, occurring in the U.S.A. and Canada (del Hoyo et al. 1994). The subspecies hueyi of New Mexico was last recorded in 1952, and is now extinct (Merrill 1967).
