Justification of Red List category
This species is listed as Vulnerable because it is thought to have a very small population size which is declining as a result of habitat loss, and is fragmented into multiple small subpopulations.
Population justification
The species is conservatively suspected to be less than 10,000 mature individuals, and possibly less than 2,500 mature individuals, based on known records, low population density estimates for closely related species and assuming only a proportion of its range is occupied. Therefore it is currently placed in the range of 2,500-9,999 mature individuals. It is also assumed that the number of individuals in each subpopulation of C. camarinensis is likely less than 1,000 mature individuals.
Trend justification
The population is thought to be in decline owing to ongoing habitat destruction.
Cyornis carmarinensis is confined to southern Luzon and Catanduanes (see Clement and de Juana 2016).
This species inhabits lowland to submontane forest (Clement and de Juana 2016).
Extensive deforestation on Luzon as a result of logging, agricultural conversion and mining activities has been the probable driver of such scarcity in the lowlands as the species’s habitat has been destroyed (see Poulsen 1995).
Conservation Actions Underway
No targeted conservation actions are known for this species.
Conservation Actions Proposed
Monitor population trends and rates of habitat loss throughout its range. Campaign for the protection of remaining areas of lowland forest on Luzon.
