LC
Purple-chested Hummingbird Polyerata rosenbergi

Justification

Justification of Red List category
This species has a very large range, and hence does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the range size criterion (Extent of Occurrence <20,000 km2 combined with a declining or fluctuating range size, habitat extent/quality, or population size and a small number of locations or severe fragmentation). The population trend appears to be stable, and hence the species does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population trend criterion (>30% decline over ten years or three generations). The population size has not been quantified, but it is not believed to approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population size criterion (<10,000 mature individuals with a continuing decline estimated to be >10% in ten years or three generations, or with a specified population structure). For these reasons the species is evaluated as Least Concern.

Population justification
The global population size has not been quantified, but this species is described as fairly common or locally common (Weller et al. 2021). A population density of 4-6 mature individuals/km2 could be observed (Weller et al. 2021); the overall population is therefore unlikely to be small.

Trend justification
The population trend has not been investigated, but the only potential threat to the species is the logging and fragmentation of forests within the range. Tree cover loss within the range is very low (2% over ten years; Global Forest Watch 2023, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein). Apart from forests, the species also occurs in forest edge, secondary growth and clearings (Weller et al. 2021);  consequently, the current rate of tree cover loss may not be affecting the population. Therefore, in the absence of evidence for any declines or substantial threats, the population is suspected to be stable.

Distribution and population

This species occurs in the Chocó of western Colombia and northwestern Ecuador.

Ecology

It inhabits lowland and premontane forests, forest edge, secondary growth and clearings (Weller et al. 2021).

Threats

Due to its preference for forest, the species may be threatened by large-scale logging activities. Tree cover loss is however low (Global Forest Watch 2023) and the species appears to show some tolerance to habitat degradation, as such, this threat is currently not thought to be driving a population reduction.
