LC
Purple-chested Hummingbird Polyerata rosenbergi

Taxonomy

Taxonomic note
Previously listed as Amazilia rosenbergi (del Hoyo and Collar 2014), but moved to current genus following a recent overhaul of all genera by NACC, based on McGuire et al. (2014), Stiles et al. (2017a, b) and others. Proposed subspecies reini (NW Ecuador) separated on basis of extent of breast patch, different throat coloration and longer bill, but these traits are deemed attributable to individual variation. Monotypic.

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but this species is described as fairly common or locally common (Weller et al. 2021). A population density of 4-6 mature individuals/km2 could be observed (Weller et al. 2021); the overall population is therefore unlikely to be small.

Trend justification: The population trend has not been investigated, but the only potential threat to the species is the logging and fragmentation of forests within the range. Tree cover loss within the range is very low (2% over ten years; Global Forest Watch 2023, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein). Apart from forests, the species also occurs in forest edge, secondary growth and clearings (Weller et al. 2021);  consequently, the current rate of tree cover loss may not be affecting the population. Therefore, in the absence of evidence for any declines or substantial threats, the population is suspected to be stable.
