Justification of Red List category
This species has a very large range, and hence does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the range size criterion (Extent of Occurrence <20,000 km² combined with a declining or fluctuating range size, habitat extent/quality, or population size and a small number of locations or severe fragmentation). The population trend appears to be stable, and hence the species does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population trend criterion (>30% decline over ten years or three generations). The population size has not been quantified, but it is not believed to approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population size criterion (<10,000 mature individuals with a continuing decline estimated to be >10% in ten years or three generations, or with a specified population structure). For these reasons the species is evaluated as Least Concern.
Population justification
The global population size has not been quantified.
Trend justification
Even though tree cover loss within the range amounts to up to 9% over ten years (Global Forest Watch 2021, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein), the species is not considered at risk as it seems to prefer secondary and disturbed growth over primary forest (Fjeldså and Kirwan 2020, WikiAves 2021).
This species occupies three separate areas in southern Brazil (Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul) and adjacent north-eastern Argentina (Misiones).
The species occurs in forest and forest edge habitats. It is apparently more numerous in second-growth and disturbed forests than in primary forests (Fjeldså and Kirwan 2020, WikiAves 2021).
The clearance of forests threatens this species, although the impacts may currently be negligible due to its preference for disturbed and secondary growth.
Conservation Actions Underway
The species occurs in several protected areas throughout its range. It is listed as Vulnerable at the national level in Argentina (MAyDS & AA 2017).
Conservation Actions Proposed
Quantify the population size. Monitor the population trend.
