Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is described as often common and locally abundant (del Hoyo et al. 2006), while national population estimates include: c.50-1,000 individuals on migration and c.50-1,000 wintering individuals in Taiwan; c.50-1,000 individuals on migration in Korea; < c.100,000 breeding pairs and < c.1,000 wintering individuals in Japan and c.10,000-100,000 breeding pairs and c.1,000-10,000 individuals on migration in Russia (Brazil 2009).

Trend justification: The population is suspected to be in decline owing to ongoing habitat destruction.
