DD
Mayr's Swiftlet Aerodramus orientalis

Justification

Justification of Red List category
This species is known only from three specimens and there are no confirmed field records. There is no information on its likely distribution extent, population size or trends. Data are therefore inadequate to determine a threat category, with plausible categories ranging from CR to LC. Additionally, its taxonomic status is uncertain and it may warrant subsuming into Uniform Swiftlet A. vanikorensis. For these reasons, it is classified as Data Deficient.

Population justification
The population size of this species has not been quantified. The species is only known from three specimens, and recent records (eBird 2023) remain unconfirmed due to the difficulty of identifying this species in the field. Furthermore, its validity as a species is uncertain: features previously used to distinguish the species have also been found in Uniform Swiftlet A. vanikorensis and it has been suggested to subsume A. orientalis into A. vanikorensis (Tarburton 2018).

Trend justification
The current population trend is unknown as the species is only known from three specimens and there is little information of its ecological requirements.

Distribution and population

This species is known only from three specimens: one each from Guadalcanal (in 1927) (Solomon Islands), New Ireland (in 1963) and Bougainville (in 1979) (Papua New Guinea) (Mayr 1935, Salomonsen 1963, Ripley 1983). Unidentified large swiftlets were seen on New Britain in 1980 (Bishop 1983), New Georgia in 1987 (Blaber 1990) and New Ireland in 1997, 1999 and 2007 (Dutson 2007), possibly referring to this species.

Ecology

It appears to be restricted to montane areas, though its exact elevational limits are not known.

Threats

Threats to this species cannot be assessed on present knowledge.

Conservation actions

Conservation Actions Underway
No targeted actions are known.

Conservation Actions Proposed
Further investigate taxonomic assignation. Clarify field identification criteria. Survey historical locations and potentially suitable areas for the species. Study its ecological requirements and threats.
