Justification of Red List category
Although this species may have a restricted range, it is not believed to approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the range size criterion (Extent of Occurrence <20,000 km2 combined with a declining or fluctuating range size, habitat extent/quality, or population size and a small number of locations or severe fragmentation). The population trend appears to be stable, and hence the species does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population trend criterion (>30% decline over ten years or three generations). The population size may be moderately small to large, but it is not believed to approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population size criterion (<10,000 mature individuals with a continuing decline estimated to be >10% in ten years or three generations, or with a specified population structure). For these reasons the species is evaluated as Least Concern.
Population justification
The population on Réunion was estimated to be 49,500 individuals in the late 1970s, based on population densities (Safford and Hawkins 2013). On Mauritius, the population was estimated at 250 pairs in 1974, but in 1993, that estimate dropped to 100-300 individuals (Moeliker 2020). No recent population estimates have been made, however the population on Réunion is still considered to be widespread and common (Bristol et al. 2013).
Trend justification
The main threat to this species is habitat degradation, fragmentation, and invasive species (Bristol et al. 2013). Deforestation data from 2000-2012 (Tracewski et al. 2016) suggests that suitable habitat is being lost at a rate of c.1.1% over 10 years. While the Mascarene Paradise-flycatcher prefers forest with limited human disturbance, it is also known to occupy less suitable habitat (Safford and Hawkins 2013), and therefore the population is likely to be stable.
