Justification of Red List category
This species has a very large range, and hence does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the range size criterion (Extent of Occurrence <20,000 km2 combined with a declining or fluctuating range size, habitat extent/quality, or population size and a small number of locations or severe fragmentation). The population trend appears to be stable, and hence the species does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population trend criterion (>30% decline over ten years or three generations). The population size is very large, and hence does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population size criterion (<10,000 mature individuals with a continuing decline estimated to be >10% in ten years or three generations, or with a specified population structure). For these reasons the species is evaluated as Least Concern.
Population justification
Rosenberg et al. (2016) estimate the global population size to be 79,000 mature individuals.
Trend justification
Long-term trend data (1966-2017) from the Christmas Bird Count suggests an annual decline of 0.11% (2.42% decrease to 2.89% increase). This would equate to a reduction of 1.32% (26.54% reduction to 43.12% increase) over three generations (c.12.5 years) (T. Meehan in litt. 2018). Conversely, recent trends (2005-2015) from the North American Breeding Bird survey suggest a non-significant annual increase of 0.55% (5.97% decrease to 10.12% increase) (Sauer et al. 2017). Partners in Flight (Rosenberg et al. 2016) do estimate that the species could have a relatively short future half-life, but given the trend data from the Christmas Bird Count, and recent trends from Sauer et al. (2017), the population is tentatively considered to be stable.
