Population justification: Rosenberg et al. (2016) estimate the global population size to be 79,000 mature individuals.
Trend justification: Long-term trend data (1966-2017) from the Christmas Bird Count suggests an annual decline of 0.11% (2.42% decrease to 2.89% increase). This would equate to a reduction of 1.32% (26.54% reduction to 43.12% increase) over three generations (c.12.5 years) (T. Meehan in litt. 2018). Conversely, recent trends (2005-2015) from the North American Breeding Bird survey suggest a non-significant annual increase of 0.55% (5.97% decrease to 10.12% increase) (Sauer et al. 2017). Partners in Flight (Rosenberg et al. 2016) do estimate that the species could have a relatively short future half-life, but given the trend data from the Christmas Bird Count, and recent trends from Sauer et al. (2017), the population is tentatively considered to be stable.
