Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but the species is reported to be fairly common but local (Clement and Hathway 2000), while national population sizes have been estimated at c.100-10,000 breeding pairs and c.50-1,000 individuals on migration in China, c.100-10,000 breeding pairs and c.50-1,000 individuals on migration in Japan (Brazil 2009).
Trend justification: The population trend is difficult to determine because of uncertainty over the impacts of habitat modification on population sizes.
