Site description (2007 baseline)
There are five lakes on the Tokachi coast including Lake Yudonuma (inland sea-lake 349 ha), Lake Chosetsuko (137 ha), Lake Oikamanaitou (175 ha), Lake Horokayantounuma (60 ha), and Lake Kimontonuma is 5 km inland. The surrounding areas are swamplands and these include the southern area. Main vegetation in the center of the area is dominated by Phragmites australis and Calamagrostis langsdorffii community, Gale belgica var. tomentosa and Calex lasiocarpa var. occultaus community, Carex lyngbrei community and Alnus japonica forest. And in the lakes, aquatic plants such as Scirpus tabernaemontani community, Zizania latifolia community, Menyanthes trifoliate community, Persicaria amphibia, Trapa japonica, Utriclaria japonica, Nuphar japonica, Brasenia schreberi grow.
