Justification of Red List category
This species is restricted to a very small range on a single mountain and it is only known from specimens collected in 1928/1929 and in the 1950s. There is no current or historical information on the population size and trend. The species's presumed range and habitat appear secure and not under imminent threats, but the status of the population is unknown. It is therefore assessed as Data Deficient.
Population justification
The species has not been observed in the wild and is only known from specimens. The population size has not been quantified.
Trend justification
The population trend has not been assessed directly. The species's preferred grassland habitats are thought to be under no imminent pressure due to their remote and inaccessible nature (Jaramillo 2020). Given it's presumably highly restricted range, the species may however be vulnerable to stochastic events.
Emberizoides duidae is restricted to Cerro Duida in Amazonas, south Venezuela (Chapman 1929). It is known only from a handful of specimens collected in 1928 and 1929 in the south-eastern part of Cerro Duida and in the 1950s in the north-eastern part (Chapman 1929; Hilty 2003; C. Sharpe in litt. 2021).
This species inhabits savanna grasslands at 1,000-2,040 m (Chapman 1929), and little is known of its ecology except that it occurs above the altitudinal range of it congener E. herbicola.
It is very poorly known but, owing to the largely inaccessible nature of the isolated Pantepui region, its habitat remains relatively undisturbed (Huber and Alarcón 1988; Jaramillo 2020). However, the effects of catastrophic events, such as a major conflagration, could be serious, since tepui vegetation tends not to regrow but is replaced by bracken Pteridium (Stattersfield et al. 1998).
Conservation Actions Underway
No targeted actions are known for this species.
Conservation Actions Proposed
Locate populations on Cerro Duida. Quantify the population size. Monitor population trends. Identify potential threats. Investigate the species's biology and ecology. Ensure the protection of native campo grasslands within the range.
