Taxonomic note
Previously listed as Amazilia tobaci (del Hoyo and Collar 2014), but moved to current genus following a recent overhaul of all genera by NACC, based on McGuire et al. (2014), Stiles et al. (2017a, b) and others. Proposed subspecies apurensis (from Apure) probably falls within range of individual variation of subspecies feliciae. A specimen said to have been taken on Grenada, and described as Saucerottia wellsi, has alternatively been treated as vagrant of nominate subspecies; its true origin, however, appears dubious. Seven subspecies recognized.

Population justification: The global population size has not been quantified, but this species is described as 'common' (Stotz et al. 1996). This species is considered to have a medium dependency on forest habitat, and tree cover is estimated to have declined by 4.2% within its mapped range over the past 10 years (Global Forest Watch 2022, using Hansen et al. [2013] data and methods disclosed therein). Therefore, as a precautionary measure, it is tentatively suspected that this loss of cover may have led to a decline of between 1-19% in the species' population size over the same time frame.
