Justification of Red List category
This species has an extremely large range and the population size is unknown, but does not approach the thresholds for Vulnerable under the population size criterion. The population trend is not known, but the population is not believed to be decreasing sufficiently rapidly to approach the thresholds under the population trend criterion. For these reasons the species is evaluated as Least Concern.
Population justification
The vast majority of this species' range is in North Africa, where no estimates of population size are available. On the Canary Islands, the total population size is estimated at 40,600-201,000 mature individuals, with 20,300-101,000 breeding pairs (BirdLife International 2021). The population trend of this species is not known, either in the Canary Islands (BirdLife International 2021) or North Africa where most occur.
