Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
The lake is situated along the által stream, and is bordered by the town of Tata. It is the largest area of standing water in the district, and has an average depth of 2.3 m when full. Following temporary drainage for fish-farming, shallow water pools and inlets cover large areas. Human activities include boating and angling.

Key biodiversity
An important roosting site for wintering wildfowl, especially for Anser fabalis. A total of 220 bird species have been recorded at the site.

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Threats include recreational disturbance and nutrient pollution from inappropriate development and fish-farming. The site is protected by a municipal alliance and, between 1 October and 30 April, by a temporary Ramsar designation. Wildfowl shooting is banned, and a management plan exists for the site. Research into, and measures for, the rehabilitation of the lake and its catchment have been implemented.
