Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A small salt-lake of tectonic origin bordered by mountains to the north and agricultural lands to the south, east and west. It is fed by a number of small streams; reedbeds (
Phragmites) have developed at the inflows. During the last decade the lake has been almost permanently dry, with a maximum of 5% flooded at the deepest points during March 1994.
The IBA has supported large numbers of wildfowl in the past. Recent counts have been low due to falling water-levels.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
During 1988 DSÝ widened the outlet of the lake. It is unclear whether this, or the lack of rainfall in recent years, is responsible for the low water-levels.
