Çavuşçu Lake

Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A freshwater lake (the remnants of a 5,000 ha wetland) fed by the Battal and çebiþçi streams, containing scattered reedbeds (mainly Phragmites). Water leaves through a controlled outlet in the south and from a pumping station on the western shore. The lake is surrounded by sheep-grazed arid hills, with arable land, Salix stands, orchards and cattle-grazed meadows immediately to the north and south.

Key biodiversity
The site is important for breeding terns (Sterninae) and large numbers of wintering wildfowl. There are indications that the lake was of greater importance prior to manipulation of its water regime.

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The high water-level maintained within the embanked lake has resulted in an impoverished flora. Some new marsh habitat may form as a result of silt accumulation in the lake, provided such areas are protected against agricultural encroachment. During 1995 an investigation was begun into the planned construction of a coal-fired power-station in the lake environs.

Protected areas
National High International None1,200 ha of IBA covered by SÝT (çavuþçu Gölü, 1,200 ha).
