Site description (2000 baseline)
A freshwater lake (the remnants of a 5,000 ha wetland) fed by the Battal and çebiþçi streams, containing scattered reedbeds (mainly Phragmites). Water leaves through a controlled outlet in the south and from a pumping station on the western shore. The lake is surrounded by sheep-grazed arid hills, with arable land, Salix stands, orchards and cattle-grazed meadows immediately to the north and south.
Key biodiversity
The site is important for breeding terns (Sterninae) and large numbers of wintering wildfowl. There are indications that the lake was of greater importance prior to manipulation of its water regime.
