Site summary
A range of hills of Volovské vrchy consists of beech forests in the eastern part (Čierna hora), fir forests in the central part and spruce forests in the western part. Valuable virgin fir forests are preserved in Starovodská dolina. Narrow and poor valleys, used mainly for grazing, contain a number of original plant communities (e.g. peatbogs). Sparsely, mountain meadows of valuable wetland, plant and animal communities are present on the top of the ridges. Prevailing habitats are conifer, mixed and deciduous forests, meadows and pastures. Main human activities are forestry, haymaking and grazing. Hunting and hiking are spread in the whole area. The site is important for conservation of typical Carpathian forest bird species, mainly forest birds, forest raptors and owls, and the biggest population of Collared Flycatcher in Slovakia. Intensive forestry, deforestation and disturbance threaten the birds. The site is proposed as an SPA.
