Site summary
The site consists of a range of forested mountains situated in the inner Western Carpathians. The most common ecosystems are beech and beech-fir forests. There are also some significant mountain meadows, pastures and numerous limestone formations. Human activities include forestry and hunting. Valleys are used for tourism and recreation. Mountain meadows and pastures are used for sheep and cattle grazing. The area is an important breeding site for forest species, including those which nest in holes, on rocky stands, highland river courses, and mountain meadows and grassland. The site is one of the five most important locations for Peregrine Falcon and Golden Eagle nesting in Slovakia. Bird populations are threatened by forestry, land abandonment, unregulated recreational activities and tourism. The site is proposed as an SPA.
