Site summary
The fish-pond system of Veľké Blohovo is situated in centra l Žitný ostrov. Neighbouring land includes fragments of fens, and well-settled successive wetland vegetation with sporadic willow underbrush. These three fishponds are bordered with canals and poplar avenues. The broader surrounding area consists of intensively managed arable land. Water is the main habitat. The area is used primarily for intensive fish breeding and hunting. The site is an important nesting area for waterbirds, and it is one of the five most important nesting sites for the Little Bittern. The site is also an important refuge for migrating and wintering water and wetland birds. The main threats to birds include intensive use of fishponds and water bird hunting. The site is proposed as an SPA.
