LU005
Valley of the Syre

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2009 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Spotted Crake Porzana porzana LC passage (2000–2009) 3–5 birds C6
White Stork Ciconia ciconia LC non-breeding (2000–2009) 1–10 birds C6
Common Kingfisher Alcedo atthis LC resident (2000–2009) 2–3 pairs C6
Aquatic Warbler Acrocephalus paludicola VU passage (2000–2009) 3–6 birds C6

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2009. The most recent assessment (2009) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2009 very poor high medium
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes habitat good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Aquatic Warbler Acrocephalus paludicola 3 / 3 (birds) 100 good
Sedge Warbler Acrocephalus schoenobaenus 2 / 1 (females) 100 good

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Grassland poor (40–69%) good (>90%) poor
Wetlands (inland) good (>90%) good (>90%) good
Forest good (>90%) good (>90%) good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Residential and commercial development happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation No management plan exists, but the management planning process has begun Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity medium
