IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2000 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Whooper Swan Cygnus cygnus LC winter (1995) 4,086 birds A4i, B1i, C2
Tundra Swan Cygnus columbianus LC non-breeding (1994) 4,320 birds A4i, B1i, B2, C2, C6
Eurasian Wigeon Mareca penelope LC non-breeding (1993) 26,650 birds B1i, C3
Pied Avocet Recurvirostra avosetta LC breeding (1993) 156 pairs B3
Eurasian Golden Plover Pluvialis apricaria LC non-breeding (1993) 14,000 birds B1i, C2
Mew Gull Larus canus LC breeding (1996) 2,210–5,000 pairs B2
A4iii Species group - waterbirds n/a winter (1993–1995) 20,000-49,999 birds A4iii, C4

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2000. The most recent assessment (2010) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2010 very poor high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Tundra Swan Cygnus columbianus 125 / 4,320 (birds) 3 very poor
Brent Goose Branta bernicla 1,635 / 2,154 (birds) 76 moderate
Greylag Goose Anser anser 3,000 / 3,000 (birds) 100 good
Pink-footed Goose Anser brachyrhynchus 9,550 / 9,550 (birds) 100 good
Common Goldeneye Bucephala clangula 3,011 / 3,500 (birds) 87 moderate
Eurasian Coot Fulica atra 6,000 / 42,000 (birds) 15 very poor
Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia 18 / 18 (pairs) 100 good
Eurasian Bittern Botaurus stellaris 2 / 2 (pairs) 100 good
Little Tern Sternula albifrons 0 / 3 (pairs) 0 very poor
Western Marsh-harrier Circus aeruginosus 5 / 5 (pairs) 100 good
Montagu's Harrier Circus pygargus 2 / 2 (pairs) 100 good
Circus cyaneus 4 / 11 (birds) 37 very poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Pollution happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
Natural system modifications happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Transportation and service corridors likely in short term (<4 years) whole of population/area (>90%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation No management plan exists, but the management planning process has begun Some limited conservation initiatives are in place low
