Site description (2007 baseline)
The IBA lies in the Maydantal section of Chatkalsky Nature Reserve which borders the watershed of the Chatkal mountain range in the north. All of the rivers on the site flow into the Serkelisay, which flows into the Akbulaksay beyond the zapovednik. The Tereklisay is the central river on this area and runs from south to north across the nature reserve.
Key biodiversity
The avifauna of the Maydantal area includes 112 species including 97 breeding, and 25 migrating and vagrant (Lanovenko, 1997). The ornithocomplex of the Tereklisay basin relates to the Western Tyan-Shan faunistic region.
Numerous species in this complex are: Pyrrhocorax graculus, Corvus corone, Alectoris chukar, Emberiza bruniceps, Turdus merula, Turdus viscivorus, Anthus spinoletta, Motacilla cinerea, Streptopelia orientalis and Columba palumbus. Species recorded in summer and during migration include: Merops apiaster, Apus apus, Eremophila alpestris, Saxicola torquata, Phylloscopus sp., Sturnus vulgaris, Sturnus roseus, and wintering species are: Emberiza citrinella and Fringilla montifringilla.
Two species from biome CA06 occur - Parus rufonuchalis and Parus flavipectus.
Non-bird biodiversity: There are 6 species of fish, two of them (Cottus gobio jaxartensis and Glyptosternum reticulatum) are included in the National Red Book. There are 2 species of amphibian, about 10 species of reptile (Vipera ursinii is included in the Red Data Book of Uzbekistan) and about 30 species of mammal including Marmota menzbieri, Dryomys nitedula, Cricetulus migratorius, Ursus arctos isabellinus and Uncia uncia. The flora includes more than 700 species of vascular plant including such rare species as Allium aflatunense, A. motor, A. pskemense, Trollius altaicus, Tulipa bifloriformis, T. butkovii, T. greigii, T. kaufmanniana, Prangos tschimganica, Ferula juniperina, Astragalus rubrovenosus, Crocus alatavicus, Paeonia hybrida, Allochrusa gypsophiloides, Eremurus lactiflorus, E. robustus, Salsola titovii, Dracocephalum nodulosum, Trichanthemis butkovii and Cousinia strobilocephala. There are juniper and poplar woodlands, meadows and alpine grasslands.
