IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2009 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Caucasian Snowcock Tetraogallus caucasicus LC resident (2000–2007) 370–550 pairs A2
Caucasian Grouse Lyrurus mlokosiewiczi NT resident (2000–2007) 700–850 pairs A1, A2, B2
Bearded Vulture Gypaetus barbatus NT resident (2000–2007) 2–4 pairs B2
Egyptian Vulture Neophron percnopterus EN passage (2000–2007) 5–10 birds A1
Eastern Imperial Eagle Aquila heliaca VU passage (2000–2007) 10–60 birds A1
Pallid Harrier Circus macrourus NT passage (2000–2007) 100–200 birds A1
European Roller Coracias garrulus LC passage (2000–2007) max 100 birds A1
Mountain Chiffchaff Phylloscopus sindianus LC breeding (2000–2007) 1,500–2,500 pairs A2, B2
Krueper's Nuthatch Sitta krueperi LC resident (2000–2007) 3,000–4,000 pairs A1, B2
A4iv Species group - soaring birds/cranes n/a passage (2000–2007) min 3,000 birds B1iv

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2009. The most recent assessment (2007) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2007 moderate low high
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no population -

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Golden Eagle Aquila chrysaetos 5 / 7 (pairs) 72 moderate
Falco peregrinus 4 / 7 (pairs) 58 not assessed
Krueper's Nuthatch Sitta krueperi 4,000 / 4,000 (pairs) 100 good
Wallcreeper Tichodroma muraria 20 / 40 (pairs) 50 not assessed

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Whole area (>90%) covered by appropriate conservation designation A comprehensive and appropriate management plan exists that aims to maintain or improve the populations of qualifying bird species The conservation measures needed for the site are being comprehensively and effectively implemented high
