Talimardzhan Reservoir This is an IBA in Danger!

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2019 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Sociable Lapwing Vanellus gregarius CR passage (2015–2019) 1,310–4,685 birds A1, A4
A4iii Species group - waterbirds n/a winter (2016–2018) 29,203–70,662 birds B3b

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2019. The most recent assessment (2019) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2019 good very high very low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population good

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Sociable Lapwing Vanellus gregarius 4,685 / 4,000 (birds) 100 good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Natural system modifications happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Climate change and severe weather likely in short term (<4 years) most of population/area (50–90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Biological resource use happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) No management planning has taken place Some limited conservation initiatives are in place very low

Habitats

Habitat % of IBA Habitat detail
Desert 50 Desert & semi-desert - clay
Artificial/Terrestrial 44 Arable land; Other urban & industrial areas
Wetlands (inland) 6 Standing fresh water

Land use

Land use % of IBA
agriculture 90
fisheries/aquaculture 5
water management 5
