Taihang Shan Macaque Nature Reserve


Site description (2009 baseline):

Site location and context
Taihang Shan is on the boundary between the warm temperate region and the temperate region. The IBA has well preserved broadleaf forests typical of both regions. Taihang Shan Macaque Nature Reserve is located on the southern slope of the southern Taihang Shan mountains, and the main submit Tiantan Shan reaches 1,715 m. The nature reserve has a core area of 6,173.5 ha.

Key biodiversity

Non-bird biodiversity: Nationally protected plants include Cercidiphyllum japonicum and Sinowilsonia henryi. Animals include Moschus berezovskii, Naemorhedus goral, Macaca mulatta and Lutra lutra.



Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
The provincial-level Jiyuan Macaque Nature Reserve was established in 1982 and the provincial-level Qinyang Baisong Macaque Nature Reserve in 1991. These two reserves were combined to form Taihang Shan Macaque Nature Reserve, which was designated as a national nature reserve in 1998.
