Southern part of Chograiski reservoir

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2008 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Red-breasted Goose Branta ruficollis VU passage (2006) 400 birds A1, A4i, B1i
Greylag Goose Anser anser LC passage (2006) 3,500 birds B1i
Greater White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons LC passage (2006) 3,000 birds B1i
Common Shelduck Tadorna tadorna LC non-breeding (2006) 2,000 birds B1i
Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ferruginea LC non-breeding (2006) 4,000 birds A4i, B1i
Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca NT passage (2006) 60 birds A1
Demoiselle Crane Anthropoides virgo LC passage (2006) 2,500 birds A4i, B1i
Dalmatian Pelican Pelecanus crispus NT non-breeding (2006) 50 birds A1, A4i, B1i
Sociable Lapwing Vanellus gregarius CR passage (2005–2006) 900 birds A1, A4i, B1i

Black-winged Pratincole Glareola nordmanni NT non-breeding (2006) 3,500 birds A1, A4i, B1i

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2008. The most recent assessment (2006) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2006 moderate high very low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
no habitat medium

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Grassland good (>90%) moderate (70–90%) moderate
Wetlands (inland) good (>90%) good (>90%) good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Biological resource use happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of area covered (<10%) No management planning has taken place Very little or no conservation action taking place very low
