Site location and context
A large, very shallow bay with stone reefs, numerous islands and several inlets along the coast.
The area is of high importance for wintering waterbirds, with tens of thousands of birds regularly wintering at the site, including over 8% of the north-west European population of
Cygnus olor.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The IBA encompasses the seawater areas of six Special Protection Areas and four Ramsar Sites. Futhermore, the entire area has been proposed as an offshore Baltic Sea Protected Area.

IBA overlaps with Special Protection Area (Sea area between Skælskør Fjord and Glænø, 15,960 ha). IBA overlaps with Special Protection Area (Skælskør Nor, Skælskør Fjord and Gammelsø, 2,530 ha). 29,216 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Smålandshavet north of Lolland, 41,680 ha).
