Site location and context
The IBA is located on the Shatian Peninsular in south-eastern Hepu County, and has eastern and western coastal sections. The coastline of the nature reserve is 50 km long, with 4,000 ha of land and 4,000 ha of sea. 720 ha of mangroves remain, most of the mangrove stands in the more inland areas having been converted into agricultural land.
Non-bird biodiversity: There are 13 species of mangroves in the nature reserve.
Conservation responses/actions for key biodiversity
Established as a national nature reserve in 1990 to protect the mangroves. The reserve was designated in 2000 as a ‘Biosphere Reserve’ under UNESCO’s Man and Biosphere (MAB) Programme, and in 2002 as a ‘Wetland of International Importance’ (or Ramsar site) under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
