Santoña marshes


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A coastal marsh with sand-dunes and extensive intertidal mudflats. Human activities include fishing and shellfish collecting.



Key biodiversity
The most important wintering and passage site for waterbirds on the north coast of the Iberian peninsula.



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
There are numerous current and potential threats to this site. These include proposals for industrial development with infilling, a road project, aquaculture projects, urban and industrial dumping and intense hunting and tourism. A management plan was approved in 1997.



Protected areas
National Partial International High3,866 ha of IBA covered by Natural Reserve (Marismas de Santoña y Noja, 3,866 ha). 6,907 ha of IBA covered by Ramsar Site (Marismas de Santoña, 6,907 ha). 6,907 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Marismas de Santoña, 6,907 ha).
