Salar del Hombre Muerto

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2008 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('key species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Chilean Flamingo Phoenicopterus chilensis NT resident (2001–2003) 1,000-2,499 individuals A1
Andean Flamingo Phoenicoparrus andinus VU resident (2001–2003) 250-999 individuals A1, A4i
Puna Flamingo Phoenicoparrus jamesi NT resident (2001–2003) 50-249 individuals A1
Grey-breasted Seedsnipe Thinocorus orbignyianus LC breeding (2001–2003) 250-999 individuals A4i
Andean Condor Vultur gryphus VU resident (2001–2003) < 50 individuals A1

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2008. The most recent assessment (2014) is shown below.

IBA conservation status
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2014 not assessed high very low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes unset medium

Pressure (threats to the key species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Biological resource use happening now whole population/area (>90%) slow deterioration (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Energy production and mining happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow deterioration (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Transportation and service corridors happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow deterioration (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Natural system modifications happening now some of population/area (10–49%) rapid deterioration (>30% over 3 generations) high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) rapid deterioration (>30% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the key species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Little/none of site covered (<10%) No management planning has taken place Very little or no conservation action taking place very low

Habitats
