Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
Part of the lower Rhine flood-plain which, as a result of embankment construction and river engineering, now only floods irregularly. Habitats include reed
Phragmites-filled ditches, abandoned gravel- and clay-pits and riverine forests (mainly
Populus sp. with
Salix in inundated areas). Used primarily for agriculture, this IBA was known as `Insultheimer Hof: Ludwig-See und Im Schacher' (former site DE068) in the previous pan-European IBA inventory (Grimmett and Jones 1989).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The area is a candidate Special Area for Conservation.
