Site description (2000 baseline)
Part of the lower Rhine flood-plain which, as a result of embankment construction and river engineering, now only floods irregularly. Habitats include reed Phragmites-filled ditches, abandoned gravel- and clay-pits and riverine forests (mainly Populus sp. with Salix in inundated areas). Used primarily for agriculture, this IBA was known as `Insultheimer Hof: Ludwig-See und Im Schacher' (former site DE068) in the previous pan-European IBA inventory (Grimmett and Jones 1989).
