Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A complex of habitats, comprising the large, shallow and eutrophic Puurijärvi lake, open fields (220 ha) and several adjacent mires along the Kokemäki river. The lake is mainly bordered by forests and in summer becomes almost totally overgrown with vegetation. Isosuo and other mires are large raised bogs with extensive open areas of pools in the centre, and sparse swamp-forests or mixtures of swamps and forests at the edges.
An important staging area for
Haliaeetus albicilla and
Cygnus cygnus.
Podiceps grisegena (20 pairs),
Porzana porzana (15 pairs) and
Grus grus (10 pairs) also breed. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria:
Crex crex (max. 4 pairs, breeding).
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Puurijärvi lake has a birdwatching tower. Restoration plans include the raising of water-levels.

International High2,538 ha of IBA covered by National Park (Puurijärvi-Isosuo, 2,538 ha). 3,126 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Puurijärvi-Isosuo).
