Ponta dos Rosais - Urzelina

Site description (2002 baseline):

Site location and context
The IBA follows the coastline in two different areas: the seacliffs of Ponta dos Rosais, and the zone of Urzelina, with rocky seacliffs with ca. 200m high. Both areas are often covered with macaronesean woodland and have frequently gravel and cobble beaches at coastline.

Key biodiversity
Particularly important for breeding seabirds, includes the second largest colony of Cory's Shearwater in the archipelago

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Feral terrestrial mammals (dogs, cats, rats and weasels) affect most of the seabirds, especially those who nest in holes and burrows. Invasive plant species like the cane reduces the available nesting habitat for seabirds. The absence of the establishment of the SPA by the regional law constitutes a weakness in its surveillance and legal protection.
