Patvinsuo National Park


Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A large wilderness area just north of Koitere lake, with mires, more-or-less natural boreal forest and waterways. The mires lie at the junction of the raised bogs of inner Finland and the Pohjanmaa aapa mires. Tourism is evident, especially in summer, with several camping areas, a long network of tracks and board-walks, look-out towers and other facilities. A few roads traverse the area.



Key biodiversity
An important breeding area for boreal birds.



Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The area is a candidate SAC.



Protected areas
National High International High10,023 ha of IBA covered by National Park (Patvinsuo, 10,023 ha). 9,683 ha of IBA covered by Ramsar Site (Suomujärvi-Patvinsuo, 9,683 ha).
