Parczew forests

Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
A forest complex in the north-west part of the £êczyñsko-W³odawskie lakeland, between the Wieprz-Krzna Canal and the Tyœmienica river. The forest is drained by tributaries of the Tyœmienica (Ocho¿a, Piwonia-Bobrówka, Konotopa. Forest is mainly pine Pinus (stands up to 160 years old in some places) and mixed oak Quercus/pine, with some small stands dominated by other broadleaved species. In places there are transitional mires covered by sedge-beds (Scheuchzeria/Carex), and there are meadows along the Ocho¿a.

Key biodiversity
Breeding species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Aythya nyroca (2-3 pairs), Haliaeetus albicilla (two pairs).

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The greatest threats are drainage, selective logging of the most mature stands in the forest, and the abandonment of agricultural management of meadows (which leads to overgrowth with scrub).

Protected areas
National Low International None82 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Jezioro Obradowskie [Peatbog Reserve], 82 ha). 35 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Królowa Droga, 35 ha). 157 ha of IBA covered by Nature Reserve (Lasy Parczewskie, 157 ha).
