Parczew forests

IBA Justification

The site was identified as important in 2010 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List1 Season Year(s) Size IBA criteria
Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca NT breeding 2009 7-10 breeding pairs C6
Corncrake Crex crex LC breeding 2009 60-80 males C1
Common Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus LC breeding 2004-2009 10-20 breeding pairs C6
Eurasian Eagle-owl Bubo bubo LC breeding 2009 13-15 breeding pairs C6

1. The current IUCN Red List category. The category at the time of the IBA criteria assessment (2010) may differ.

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2010. The most recent assessment (2010) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2010 favourable very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population medium

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Reference Actual Units % remaining Result
Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca 5 10 breeding pairs 100 favourable
Eurasian Eagle-owl Bubo bubo 12 15 breeding pairs 100 favourable

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Forest poor (40-69%) poor (40-69%) very unfavourable
Wetlands (inland) moderate (70-90%) moderate (70-90%) unfavourable
Grassland moderate (70-90%) moderate (70-90%) unfavourable

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now majority/most of area/population (50-90%) very rapid to severe deterioration very high
Invasive and other problematic species and genes likely in short term (within 4 years) whole area/population (>90%) very rapid to severe deterioration very high
Biological resource use happening now whole area/population (>90%) moderate to rapid deterioration very high
Natural system modifications happening now majority/most of area/population (50-90%) moderate to rapid deterioration high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now majority/most of area/population (50-90%) moderate to rapid deterioration high
Pollution happening now some of area/population (10-49%) moderate to rapid deterioration high
Climate change and severe weather happening now some of area/population (10-49%) moderate to rapid deterioration high
Residential and commercial development happening now some of area/population (10-49%) slow but significant deterioration medium
No known threats happening now small area/few individuals (<10%) no or imperceptible deterioration low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Protected areas Management plan Other action Result
Most of site (50-90%) covered (including the most critical parts for important bird species) No management planning has taken place Substantive conservation measures are being implemented but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low
