Parczew forests

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2010 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca NT breeding (2009) 7–10 pairs C6
Corncrake Crex crex LC breeding (2009) 60–80 males C1
Common Little Bittern Ixobrychus minutus LC breeding (2004–2009) 10–20 pairs C6
Eurasian Eagle-owl Bubo bubo LC breeding (2009) 13–15 pairs C6

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2010. The most recent assessment (2010) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2010 good very high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes population medium

State (condition of the trigger species' populations)
Species Actual vs Reference (units) % remaining Result
Ferruginous Duck Aythya nyroca 10 / 5 (pairs) 100 good
Eurasian Eagle-owl Bubo bubo 15 / 12 (pairs) 100 good

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Forest poor (40–69%) poor (40–69%) very poor
Wetlands (inland) moderate (70–90%) moderate (70–90%) poor
Grassland moderate (70–90%) moderate (70–90%) poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Invasive and other problematic species and genes happening now whole of population/area (>90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) very high
Biological resource use happening now whole of population/area (>90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) very high
Natural system modifications happening now most of population/area (50–90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now most of population/area (50–90%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Pollution happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Climate change and severe weather happening now some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) high
Human intrusions and disturbance happening now some of population/area (10–49%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) medium
No known threats happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low
Residential and commercial development happening now few individuals/small area (<10%) no or slight decline (<1% over 3 generations) low

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Most of area (50–90%) covered (including the most critical parts for important bird species) No management planning has taken place Substantive conservation measures are being implemented, but these are not comprehensive and are limited by resources and capacity low
