Site description (2000 baseline):
Site location and context
A fjord area with shoals, banks and islands (a few of which are inhabitated) with saltmarsh, reedbeds and freshwater ponds, and smaller areas of woodland, beaches and dunes.
This is an important area for wintering
Cygnus cygnus and
C. olor,
although numbers are currently lower than in 1983 when more than 20,000 waterbirds were recorded: numbers are believed to be higher in harsh winters.
Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Sterna sandvicensis, S. hirundo, S. paradisaea and
S. albifrons, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, bred at the site; several of these species still breed but data are incomplete.
Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
Indre Fjord, a freshwater lake, is highly polluted by nutrients originating mainly from urban waste, and bottom macrophytes are no longer present. Access to some parts of the site is restricted.

International High8,550 ha of IBA covered by Special Protection Area (Nakskov Fjord and Indre Fjord, 8,550 ha). 8,550 ha of IBA covered by Ramsar Site (Nakskov Fjord and Inner Fjord, 8,960 ha).
