Site description (2000 baseline)
A fjord area with shoals, banks and islands (a few of which are inhabitated) with saltmarsh, reedbeds and freshwater ponds, and smaller areas of woodland, beaches and dunes.
Key biodiversity
This is an important area for wintering Cygnus cygnus and C. olor, although numbers are currently lower than in 1983 when more than 20,000 waterbirds were recorded: numbers are believed to be higher in harsh winters. Circus aeruginosus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Sterna sandvicensis, S. hirundo, S. paradisaea and S. albifrons, listed on Annex I of the EC Birds Directive, bred at the site; several of these species still breed but data are incomplete.
