Muara Gembong - Tanjung Sedari

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2004 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Sunda Teal Anas gibberifrons NT non-breeding (1987–1998) present A4i
Javan Coucal Centropus nigrorufus VU resident (1987–1998) present A1, A2
Lesser Adjutant Leptoptilos javanicus NT resident (1987–1998) present A1
Milky Stork Mycteria cinerea EN resident (1984–1987) 15–59 birds A1
Oriental Darter Anhinga melanogaster LC resident (1987–1998) present A4i
A4iii Species group - waterbirds n/a non-breeding (1987–1998) min 20,000 birds A4iii

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2004. The most recent assessment (2012) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2012 not assessed high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes unset good

State (condition of the trigger species' habitats)
Habitat Quantity (% remaining) Quality (% carrying capacity) Result
Forest - poor (40–69%) very poor
Shrubland poor (40–69%) poor (40–69%) very poor

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Transportation and service corridors happening now some of population/area (10–49%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) high
Agricultural expansion and intensification likely in short term (<4 years) some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) medium
Residential and commercial development likely in short term (<4 years) some of population/area (10–49%) moderate decline (10–30% over 3 generations) medium

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Not assessed No management plan exists, but the management planning process has begun Some limited conservation initiatives are in place low
