GR115
Mount Kochylas, Skyros

IBA Justification

The site was identified as internationally important for bird conservation in 2000 because it was regularly supporting significant populations of the species listed below, meeting ('triggering') IBA criteria.

Populations meeting IBA criteria ('trigger species') at the site:
Species Red List Season (year/s of estimate) Size IBA criteria
Eleonora's Falcon Falco eleonorae LC breeding (1996) 60 pairs B2, C6
Cinereous Bunting Emberiza cineracea NT breeding (1994) present A1, B2, C1, C6
Cretzschmar's Bunting Emberiza caesia LC breeding (1996) common B3, C6

IBA Conservation

Ideally the conservation status of the IBA will have been checked regularly since the site was first identified in 2000. The most recent assessment (2019) is shown below.

IBA conservation assessment
Year of assessment State Pressure Response
2019 not assessed high low
Whole site assessed? State assessed by Accuracy of information
yes unset good

Pressure (threats to the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Threat Timing Scope Severity Result
Agricultural expansion and intensification happening now most of population/area (50–90%) slow decline (1–10% over 3 generations) high
Energy production and mining likely in short term (<4 years) most of population/area (50–90%) rapid decline (>30% over 3 generations) high

Response (conservation actions taken for the trigger species and/or their habitats)
Designation Planning Action Result
Most of area (50–90%) covered (including the most critical parts for important bird species) No management plan exists, but the management planning process has begun Some limited conservation initiatives are in place low

Habitats

Habitat % of IBA Habitat detail
Shrubland 70 Scrub; Sclerophyllous scrub, garrigue and maquis
Grassland 5 Steppes and dry calcareous grassland
Marine Coastal/Supratidal -
Rocky areas (eg. inland cliffs, mountain peaks) - Scree & boulders; Inland cliffs

Land use
