Mount Hyonosen

Site description (2007 baseline):

Site location and context
Mt Hyonosen (1,510 m) is located in the north of Hyogo Prefecture, and in the mountainous area between Hyogo Prefecture and Tottori Prefecture. Its geographic feature is an old volcano whose lava erupted to the elevated peneplain. The ground is mainly composed of the andesite. Warm temperate evergreen broadleaf trees grow well in the lower half of the mountain, and Cyryptomeria japonica and Chamaecyparis obtusa have also been planted here. At higher than 700 m, primary forests of deciduous broadleaf trees such as Fagus crenata and Aesculus turbinata dominate, and a species of Sasa kurilensis of 2-3 meters height covers the forest floors.
