Marais de Brière

Site description (2000 baseline):

Site location and context
Marshes and wet meadows, reedbeds (Phragmites), ponds and arable fields.

Key biodiversity
This is an important site for breeding and wintering waterbirds. It is also the best site for Chlidonias niger in France. Species of global conservation concern that do not meet IBA criteria: Haliaeetus albicilla (passage); Aquila clanga (passage); Crex crex (passage); Gallinago media (passage); Acrocephalus paludicola (passage).

Pressure/threats to key biodiversity
The Grande Brière is insufficiently flooded during summer (due to changes to the Loire estuary, see site 023) and the resulting high salinity is having a serious effect on the vegetation at the site. There is also considerable hunting pressure. Drainage and infilling of the surrounding areas are also reported threats.

Protected areas
National Low International High1,075 ha of IBA covered by Hunting Reserve (1,075 ha). 18,900 ha of IBA covered by Ramsar Site (Grande-Brière, 19,000 ha).
